"Shipwrecked" a play by Donald Margulies Review

Bring out your inner child at the International City Theatre (ICT) in Long Beach

October 20, 2016
We had the pleasure of seeing a performance of the play, “Shipwrecked!” at the elegant International City Theatre in Long Beach last Sunday. What’s a play doing in this family activities blog? Well, the talented cast takes all ages on a journey filled with adventure, romance, suspense, and plenty of laughs. The play really puts childrens’ imaginations to work (something that movies and TV may not always provide). In the audience we saw a few three to five year-olds, and they
looked captivated and engaged, obviously enjoying the play.

We enjoyed being whisked away in a world of magical realism as Louis de Rougemont encounters a man-eating octopus, ends up shipwrecked in the Australian outback, performs gymnastics to befriend the “savages,” rides and steers giant sea-turtles, finds love, and eventually finds his way home. At the end we are left to wonder if Louis’ adventures were real or if the stories he told were simply untrue and pure entertainment.

Amazingly enough, this 90 minute play has only three actors, two of which play multiple characters, including animals. Talk about being talented! The jokes are witty, clean and sprinkled throughout the play keeping the audience laughing throughout. Loius’ 30 year adventure is so brilliantly brought to life that no fancy special effects are needed. Just sit back and let your imagination run wild and be captivated by the story.

WHAT: Shipwrecked!! An Entertainment — The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (as Told by Himself) — Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies celebrates the power of storytelling with this theatrical adventure based on the real-life autobiography of Louis de Rougemont. An intrepid explorer who became an instant celebrity upon his return to civilization, Rougemont’s amazing tales of bravery, survival and exotic locales left 19th century England spellbound. But was it real or just a figment of his imagination? Will he be vindicated or will his reputation be ruined forever?
