Winner announced: "Don't Go to School"

The perfect book for the first day of school

By Griselda Chin August 3, 2017

Looking for a children’s book with a creative and fun way of dealing with the anxieties that little kids face at the first day school? With its imaginative storyline and beautiful illustrations, “Don’t Go to School!” by Máire Zepf handles this topic with light-hearted humor and an original plot that will delight both kids and parents as both prepare for the first day of school.

In this role-reversal tale, Benno, the little brown bear, comforts, cajoles and encourages his mommy as she is very apprehensive about Benno’s first day of school. Mommy bear just doesn’t want Benno to go to school. Can’t he just stay home with her, instead? Benno patiently talks to his mommy and explains that mommy will make friends with the other parents, that she will be fine by herself while Benno spends the day in school, and so forth. He even leaves her with a very special and sweet gift to tide her over until school is out. The role-reversal is simply brilliant. Truth be told, maybe some of us mommies could benefit from reading this book too. :)

Preschool, kindergarten and early elementary aged kids will really get a kick out of this tale. I know my son did and he will be starting preschool this fall. After reading this, don’t be surprised if your little one starts giving you advice!
