REVIEW: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorites books and movies as a young child. As soon as I heard the musical was coming to Southern California I got really excited. I told my kids the story of Charlie and his family and about the factory and the kids. They saw how excited I was and got excited themselves.

We got the amazing opportunity to watch "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Broadway Musical" at The Segerstrom Center for the  Performing Arts in Costa Mesa. It was our first time at this theater and the first time our kids were watching and experiencing a Broadway Show. The Segerstrom Center is conveniently located off the 405 Fwy and easy to get too. Parking is right next to the center so no need to walk long distances. Parking is $12 for self parking (cash only), but valet is also offered.  The theater is large and has multiple floors so make note of where the restrooms are located as they don't have restrooms on every floor. They offer small snacks and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). You can pre-order snacks at the beginning of the show so you don't have to wait in line during intermission (great idea).

The show itself was amazing. Both of our kids were able to sit through both Acts. Each act was about 1 hour long with a 15 min intermission. I recommend going to the bathroom before and during the intermission to avoid any potty breaks during the performance.

They kept most of the classic story intact with some minor changes. A few highlights for me where how they were able to showcase the Oompa Loompas. My kids loved them and we danced in ourr seats when they came out and sang their songs. I also really enjoyed how they were able to recreate the part where Mike Tv was shrunk in the TV room. It was a very impressive moment for me. Another great highlight were the jokes that were so relevant to today. I laughed out loud several times.

I asked my kids what their favorite parts where. I won't include any spoilers as there are some differences in the show than from the books and movies.

From my almost 7-year-old son: "I had so many mom. I liked when Veruca Salt .... that was so funny.  I also liked when Charlie won the factory, it made me happy. I really liked when the little people (the Oompa Loopa's) danced. They were really funny. I liked the songs. I have too many mom. I also liked when Violet got really big. Mr Wonka was really mean, but really nice too. I liked it all"

From my almost 4-year-old daughter: "I liked the ballerina, but I was sad when .... The little dancers (the Oompa Loopa's) were so funny and when Tv got really little hahahahaha he was so cute. I really liked that".

From my husband: He really enjoyed the live band and the music. He also enjoyed that there were plenty of jokes that adults can enjoy.

We highly recommend taking the entire family to watch this performance. It was a great experience.

ABOUT ROALD DAHL AND HIS LEGACY

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was a spy, ace fighter-pilot, chocolate historian and medical inventor. He was also the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more brilliant stories. He remains the World’s No.1 storyteller.

Sitting in a hut at the bottom of his garden, surrounded by odd bits and pieces such as a suitcase (used as a footrest), his own hipbone (which he’d had replaced) and a heavy ball of metal foil (made from years’ worth of chocolate wrappers), he went on to write some of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, was published in 1961, was a hit and every subsequent book became a best-seller.

Today, his stories are available in 58 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr. Fox, the multi-award-winning Matilda The Musical from the RSC with music by Tim Minchin, and Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster The BFG. The latest adaptation is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical which opened on Broadway in April 2017 following three Golden years on London’s West End.
