Book Review: Judge Juliette and Bling Blaine

Perfect for our times

By Elizabeth Varela September 24, 2020

These two books are a great way to introduce social topics to young children. Many kids are too young to understand what is happening in the world around us, but they are still aware that something is happening. I read these books with my 5 and 8-year-old kids and it brought up great conversations and a lot of Q and A. We stayed up late discussing the books.

With the passing of the amazing Supreme Court Justice, the honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg "Judge Juliette" was the perfect way talk about what a judge is, what they do and court legal terminology.

OVERVIEW

Meet Juliette, girl judge! She’s set up her own backyard court. But what will she do when her own parents come to fight it out . . . over a pet? A must-read for fans of Sonya Sotomayor’s Turning Pages: My Life Story and I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark.

Court is in session, with Judge Juliette presiding! Ever since preschool, Juliette’s favorite game has been settling cases. This young girl, with a firm sense of fairness, adjudicates all kinds of neighborhood disputes right from her own backyard—from determining a fair bedtime to figuring out where to locate competing lemonade stands. But now she’s faced with the toughest decision of all: her parents have finally agreed to let her have a pet . . . and they’ve come to her court to argue over whether to get a cat (dad’s request) or a dog (mom’s preference). What will Juliette do?

JUDGE JULIETTE By Laura Gehl (Author), Mari Lobo (Illustrator)

REVIEW: This book is very impressive. Being able to explain certain things to young children can be tough. How much do you say? How far in depth do you go without it going over their heads? This is a must read for all young kids. Kids are always trying to fight for what is "fair." I hear it all the time "It's not fair!" They are always trying to convince parents to buy them a pet, to stay up late or to be able to eat that extra cookie. This book can help kids understand what is the best way they can express their points and have their ideas for getting something heard. It has great legal/case terminology throughout the book and at the end.  A must have for you home library.

5 out of 5 stars. I loved it as a parent and my kids enjoyed learning and reading the story they can relate too.

OVERVIEW

A heartwarming picture book about the power of allies to lift others up . . . and the sparkling magic of glitter!

Blaine’s a boy who loves to shine . . . well actually, he loves to sparkle. Whether it's his uniform, his book bag, or even his baseball cap, Blaine’s all about the bling. But when his bling rubs some people the wrong way, and the bullying begins, Blaine—along with the entire school—starts to lose his shine. Can Blaine's friends bring back his glimmer and gleam by glittering up their own wardrobes? This delightful story proves that anyone can love bling, and that happiness comes when allies band together to throw glitter—not shade

BLING BLAINE Throw Glitter, Not Shade By Rob Sanders (Author), Letizia Rizzo (Illustrator)

REVIEW: We read this book a few times. We love Blaine. Like most kids he has things he really likes, that other may not like or may not understand why he likes them. This book has great story. You don't have to fit the mold. You can like what you like simply because you like it. The book is very relatable to kids and even adults. My kids kept defending Blaine and saying that it is OK to be yourself and even though there may be tough times don't let anyone discourage you fomr liksing the thinks you love. Very heartwarming story for any age.

5 out of 5 stars. My kids loved it. They loved standing up for Blaine.
